This session introduces the design considerations for achieving satellite agility. We will discuss the comparison of reaction wheels with single-gimbal CMGs (SGCMGs) and highlight the key differences between traditional SGCMGs and Tensor Tech’s spherical-motor variable-speed SGCMG (VSCMG). The focus is on understanding the trade-offs in system design and actuator selection.

Building on the fundamentals, this session examines how different actuator choices affect spacecraft performance. We will review power consumption, compare the physical volume of individual units (traditional SGCMG, Tensor Tech VSCMG, and reaction wheel), and analyze four-unit cluster configurations. Finally, we will explore the angular-momentum envelope to illustrate how Tensor Tech’s VSCMG expands spacecraft maneuvering capability within constrained mass and volume budgets.
